Math placement test practice
so the next course starts from strength
Schools use placement tests to decide whether a student moves into Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, an honors track, Geometry, Algebra 2 or Pre-Calculus. These readiness tests check the exact skills each course assumes, and the review names the ones to shore up.
- Who it is for
- Students in grades 5–11 facing a school or district math placement decision
- When it happens
- Most placement tests are given in spring for the following year, or at enrollment in a new school. Summer is when the gaps get fixed.

Concept:
Written in advance. Nothing is saved.
On a real test, the review would put these on your child's focus list, in this order, and the AI Tutor would teach each one:
- Needs work
All three right. On a real test the review would move on to harder material and show which concepts are already mastered, so no time is wasted re-practicing them.
What is on the test
The Math placement at a glance
The facts a parent needs before choosing a prep plan. Details are as published by the test maker; always confirm dates and formats with the school your child is applying to.
- Who gives it
- Your school or district, sometimes a new private school at admission. Formats vary, so we test the skills rather than any one school's form.
- What it decides
- Which course a student enters next year, and whether they qualify for an accelerated or honors track.
- Format
- Usually 30–60 multiple-choice or short-answer questions in one sitting, often without a calculator.
- What is on it
- The prerequisite skills of the target course: fractions and ratios before Pre-Algebra, linear equations before Geometry, functions before Pre-Calculus.
- Scoring
- Schools set their own cutoffs. Our Readiness Report shows each skill area as a percentage so you can see how far from ready your child is.
| Section | What it tests | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Middle School Math Placement | Grade 6–7 readiness: fractions, decimals, ratios, integers, basic equations | Middle school |
| Pre-Algebra Readiness | Is the student ready to skip to Algebra 1? | Grades 6–8 |
| Algebra Readiness | Pre-algebra skills needed to succeed in Algebra 1 | Grades 7–9 |
| Honors Math Readiness | Depth and speed expected of an honors track | Middle school |
| Geometry Readiness | Algebra fluency and reasoning needed for Geometry | Grades 7–9 |
| Algebra 2 Readiness | Functions, systems and quadratics from Algebra 1 | Grades 9–11 |
| Pre-Calculus Readiness | Algebra 2 fluency and function sense | Grades 10–11 |

How it works
Every wrong answer becomes a named concept, then a lesson
Most prep hands a student a score and a bigger pile of questions. This is the loop instead.
-
Step 1
Practice test
Full-length, short or mini versions of the Math placement, timed by section, with an adaptive mode that finds the student's level fast.
-
Step 2
Test Review
Each miss is tied to a specific concept. The review ranks the concepts by how much they are costing and says what to do first.
-
Step 3
AI Tutor and Readiness Report
A short lesson on the concept, a fresh round of questions to prove it stuck, and a report you can read in a minute to see where your child stands.
Preparing for the Math placement
Three things that move the score
Start with the diagnostic, not the hardest test
A readiness test one level below the goal often reveals the gap that is actually holding the student back.
Fix the arithmetic first
Fraction operations, negatives and order of operations sink more placement results than any algebra topic.
Practice without a calculator
Many placement tests forbid one. Mental fluency with fractions and percentages is part of what is being measured.

Math placement practice test FAQ
No two schools use the same test, so we test the skills every version draws on. If your school publishes a topic list, pick the readiness test whose course matches and use the Readiness Report to check each topic.
Take the readiness test for the course they want to enter, such as Algebra Readiness for a student aiming to skip into Algebra 1. If they score well, try the Honors Math Readiness test.
Every wrong answer is tied to a named skill, the review ranks the skills to work on first, and the AI Tutor teaches each one with a short lesson and a fresh set of problems.
Four to eight weeks of short sessions is typical. Take a readiness test first, work only on the flagged skills, then retest to confirm.
The sample test is free and needs no account. Full practice tests and Test Reviews start at $10 a month, and plans with the AI Tutor start at $20 a month. Cancel anytime.
