PSAT/NMSQT practice test
for the score and the National Merit run
PSAT-style practice for the current digital, adaptive format. After each test, the review pins every wrong answer to a specific concept and ranks what to work on first. The AI Tutor teaches it. Three free questions to start.
- Who it is for
- High school sophomores and juniors, especially juniors targeting National Merit
- When it happens
- The main sitting is the third Saturday of October each fall. Only the 11th grade attempt is scored for National Merit.

Concept:
Written in advance. Nothing is saved.
On a real test, the review would put these on your child's focus list, in this order, and the AI Tutor would teach each one:
- Needs work
All three right. On a real test the review would move on to harder material and show which concepts are already mastered, so no time is wasted re-practicing them.
What is on the test
The PSAT at a glance
The facts a parent needs before choosing a prep plan. Details are as published by the test maker; always confirm dates and formats with the school your child is applying to.
- Format
- Digital and adaptive. Two subjects — Reading and Writing, then Math — each split into two modules. Module 2 in each subject is easier or harder based on Module 1 performance.
- Length
- 2 hours 14 minutes: 64 minutes of Reading and Writing and 70 minutes of Math, with a short break between.
- Scoring
- 160 to 760 per section, 320 to 1520 total. A Selection Index of 2 × (R&W ÷ 10) + (Math ÷ 10) is used by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation to name Commended (upper 50,000), Semifinalists (top ~16,000) and Finalists.
- Calculator
- Allowed on every Math question, with a built-in graphing calculator in the app.
- Question style
- Short passages, one question each in Reading and Writing. Math is mostly multiple choice with a small share of typed-answer questions.
| Section | What it tests | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and Writing, Module 1 | Vocabulary in context, main idea and evidence, transitions, punctuation between clauses | 27 questions · 32 min |
| Reading and Writing, Module 2 | Same skills; difficulty adapts to Module 1 | 27 questions · 32 min |
| Math, Module 1 | Algebra, advanced math, problem solving and data analysis, geometry and trigonometry | 22 questions · 35 min |
| Math, Module 2 | Same content; difficulty adapts to Module 1 | 22 questions · 35 min |
Because Module 2 adapts, a strong first module unlocks the harder question set and the top of the score range — which is where Semifinalist Selection Indexes live.

How it works
Every wrong answer becomes a named concept, then a lesson
Most prep hands a student a score and a bigger pile of questions. This is the loop instead.
-
Step 1
Practice test
Full-length, short or mini versions of the PSAT, timed by section, with an adaptive mode that finds the student's level fast.
-
Step 2
Test Review
Each miss is tied to a specific concept. The review ranks the concepts by how much they are costing and says what to do first.
-
Step 3
AI Tutor and Readiness Report
A short lesson on the concept, a fresh round of questions to prove it stuck, and a report you can read in a minute to see where your child stands.
Preparing for the PSAT
Three things that move the score
Move fast in the middle, not the ends
Every module is easiest-to-hardest. Banking time on the first ten questions is what makes the last five reachable.
Own linear equations and systems
The largest slice of PSAT Math. Fluency there raises the score faster than any single geometry topic.
Learn the short list of grammar rules that repeat
Subject-verb agreement, punctuation joining clauses, and transition words account for most of the Standard English questions and are quick to master.
Watch the state cutoff, not just the composite
For juniors, the Selection Index is what National Merit reads. States with high cutoffs (California, New Jersey, DC, Massachusetts) reward small, targeted gains.

PSAT practice test FAQ
No. UnofficialPrep is not affiliated with the College Board or the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Our questions are original and match the content, difficulty and timing of the digital PSAT/NMSQT. Official Bluebook practice tests are a good final rehearsal; use ours to find and fix weak concepts before then.
Our adaptive mode adjusts question difficulty as your child answers, so the experience is similar. The point of practice here is different from the real test: every answer feeds a focus list of concepts to work on.
Take the Reading and Writing section score divided by 10 and doubled, then add the Math section score divided by 10. The maximum is 228. State Semifinalist cutoffs are set each year and typically sit between 207 and 222.
The concept set overlaps almost entirely. PSAT prep is the same domains at slightly easier difficulty. Time closing gaps for the PSAT is time already banked for the SAT next year.
The sample test is free and needs no account. Full practice tests and Test Reviews start at $10 a month, and plans with the AI Tutor start at $20 a month. Cancel anytime.
