The Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Taken by 10th and 11th graders as SAT practice and — in 11th grade — as the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Digital adaptive format (post-2023): two subjects, two modules each. Reading & Writing has 27 questions in 32 minutes per module; Math has 22 questions in 35 minutes per module with calculator (Desmos) allowed throughout. Module 2 difficulty adapts to Module 1 performance. Four answer choices per question. Score range 320 to 1520.
Reading & Writing — Module 1
Balanced sample across all four R&W domains at medium difficulty. Performance determines Module 2 difficulty.
Reading & Writing — Module 2 (Advanced)
Adjusts to Module 1Harder R&W module for students who scored above 60% on R&W Module 1.
Reading & Writing — Module 2 (Standard)
Adjusts to Module 1Standard R&W module for students who scored 60% or below on R&W Module 1.
Math — Module 1
