Instructor FAQ
Linking students, assigning work, building question banks, and what you can and can't see.
Getting started
An instructor account is for tutors and teachers. Instead of taking tests yourself, you link to students, assign them School Math topics or your own question banks, and see their results, mastery by topic, and every missed question. Your home page shows who needs attention today.
No. Instructor accounts are free. Your students subscribe to a Plus or Pro plan, the same plans any student buys, and that is what unlocks assignments on their side. If you also want to practise yourself, you can hold a plan on your own account; it is managed under Plan & billing.
On the sign-up page, choose "Tutor or teacher" before continuing with Google or email. Already have a student account? Open Settings and use "Are you a tutor or teacher?" to switch it. Your history is kept.
Not from the app. An instructor account cannot join another instructor or take assignments, so if you need to practise as a student, create a separate student account with another email. If you switched by mistake, contact us.
Your display name and subjects, set on the Students page under "How students see you". If you leave the display name blank, your account name is used. Nothing else about your account is visible to them.
Linking students
Two ways. Give them your permanent join code (or the link) from the Students page; they enter it under Settings or open the link. Or send an email invite from Home or Students; they get a one-time accept link. Either way they see a consent screen listing exactly what you can and cannot see, and accept or decline.
Send the invite to the parent's email. The parent creates or signs into the account and accepts on the child's behalf. Parents can leave an instructor at any time from Settings.
They accepted your link but their account is not on a Plus or Pro plan, so they cannot start assignments yet. You can still see their progress. As soon as they pick a plan, the status changes to Active and any work you assigned unlocks. Basic plans do not qualify.
Yes. A math tutor and an SHSAT tutor can both link to the same student. Each of you sees the same progress and only your own assignments.
Open the student and choose "Remove student" at the bottom. You lose access to their progress immediately. Their open assignments stay as they are but can no longer be started. A student can also leave you from their Settings.
Yes. Open the invited student from the roster and click "Resend invite". A new one-time link is sent and the old one stops working. Invites open for more than three days are flagged on your Home page.
What you can and cannot see
Their School Math mastery by course and topic, the topics they are struggling with, every completed practice test with its full results and Test Review, everything you assigned with progress and question-by-question detail, and how often they use the AI Tutor. You can also keep private notes on each student.
No, by design. AI Tutor chat is private between the student and the AI. You see only counts: how many sessions and how many questions asked in the last 30 days.
No. You cannot see or change their plan, password, email, or any account setting, and you cannot sign in as them.
Never. The label and notes you keep on a student are private to you.
Assigning work
Two kinds of work. A School Math topic: the student practises that concept until they have answered the number of questions you set (5 to 60), across as many sittings as they need. Or one of your question banks: taken once, timed or untimed, graded automatically. Both take a due date and a note to the student.
When the student has answered the target number of questions on that topic through the assignment. Progress carries across sittings, so 15 questions can be done over three evenings. Their mastery for the topic updates exactly as it does for self-practice.
Yes. Tick as many students as you like on the assign page. Each gets their own copy with its own progress and score.
Assignments lists everything with progress and scores. Open one for the question-by-question view, misses first, with what the student picked and the correct answer. Recently completed work also appears on your Home page.
Yes, from the assignment page while it is still open. Completed work cannot be cancelled.
Question banks
Reusable sets you build once and assign as often as you like.
A named set of multiple-choice questions, up to 300, that you can assign to any student. Each bank has its own settings: timed or untimed, shuffle order per student, show answers after submit, and an optional public link.
Four ways, all on the bank's "Add questions" page:
- Pick from School Math: choose a course and topic, browse the questions with their difficulty and how often students get them right, tick the ones you want.
- Add automatically: choose a topic and a number, and the bank draws that many approved questions at random, skipping anything already in it. The draw is fixed: the bank keeps exactly those questions from then on.
- Upload: paste rows from a spreadsheet or upload a CSV, one question per line. You get a preview before anything is saved.
- Write: one question at a time, with an explanation and optional image. LaTeX between dollar signs renders for students.
Columns in this order: question, A, B, C, D, E (optional), the correct letter, explanation (optional), image URL (optional). A header row that starts with "question" is ignored. Lines that cannot be read are listed and skipped, and the rest are added.
The hand-pick list shows the first 60 questions of a topic, and there are daily limits on how many questions you can browse and add. This protects the question bank the platform depends on. If you need more from a topic, use "Add automatically", which is not limited by browsing.
Yes. Questions picked from School Math are references, not copies, so a correction upstream shows in your bank too. Grades already recorded are not changed.
Yes, for the questions that came from School Math. When a student submits, those answers update their topic mastery just like self-practice. Questions you wrote or uploaded have no topic and do not.
They became question banks. Everything you built is still there under Question banks, with the same share links, and old bookmarks redirect.
Reading a student's progress
Not started, Familiar, Proficient, Mastered, per topic. A student moves up by answering correctly in a row and down when they miss repeatedly. "Due" means a review is scheduled so the topic does not fade. Proficient and Mastered count as "strong" on your roster.
Topics the student has practised but has not made strong, weakest first, based on accuracy and current miss streak. Each has an Assign button so you can set more practice in one click.
Yes. On the student page, every completed practice test opens the full results page, including the Test Review if the student generated one. It is read-only: you cannot generate reviews, start AI Tutor lessons, or flag questions on their behalf.
