HSPT practice test
for the one shot most students get
The High School Placement Test is nearly 300 questions in two and a half hours, and most schools allow one sitting. Practice all five sections here, see exactly which concepts cost points, and fix them before test day.
- Who it is for
- Eighth graders applying to Catholic and other private high schools
- When it happens
- Schools give the HSPT themselves, usually between November and January of eighth grade. Check each school's date; many are on the same Saturday.

Concept:
Written in advance. Nothing is saved.
On a real test, the review would put these on your child's focus list, in this order, and the AI Tutor would teach each one:
- Needs work
All three right. On a real test the review would move on to harder material and show which concepts are already mastered, so no time is wasted re-practicing them.
What is on the test
The HSPT at a glance
The facts a parent needs before choosing a prep plan. Details are as published by the test maker; always confirm dates and formats with the school your child is applying to.
- Format
- Five multiple-choice sections, 298 questions, about 2 hours 30 minutes of testing.
- Who gives it
- The high school you apply to. Some schools add optional Science, Mechanical Aptitude or Catholic Religion sections.
- Scoring
- Scaled scores from 200 to 800 per section, national and local percentiles, and composite scores. Many schools use it for placement and scholarships as well as admission.
- Guessing
- No penalty for wrong answers. Answer every question.
- Retakes
- Most schools allow one attempt, and some use the lower score if a student retests. Treat the first sitting as the only one.
| Section | What it tests | Length |

| Reading | Comprehension passages and vocabulary | 62 questions · 25 min |
| Mathematics | Arithmetic, algebra and geometry concepts and problem solving | 64 questions · 45 min |
| Language | Punctuation, capitalization, usage, spelling and composition | 60 questions · 25 min |
Verbal Skills gives about sixteen seconds a question. Pacing practice matters as much as content on this test.

How it works
Every wrong answer becomes a named concept, then a lesson
Most prep hands a student a score and a bigger pile of questions. This is the loop instead.
-
Step 1
Practice test
Full-length, short or mini versions of the HSPT, timed by section, with an adaptive mode that finds the student's level fast.
-
Step 2
Test Review
Each miss is tied to a specific concept. The review ranks the concepts by how much they are costing and says what to do first.
-
Step 3
AI Tutor and Readiness Report
A short lesson on the concept, a fresh round of questions to prove it stuck, and a report you can read in a minute to see where your child stands.
Preparing for the HSPT
Three things that move the score
Drill the formats that schools never teach
Number series, logic statements and quantitative comparisons are unfamiliar to most eighth graders. Learning the patterns is fast and worth many points.
Go fast on Verbal Skills
Sixty questions in sixteen minutes. Students who answer instinctively and move on outscore those who reread.
Brush up on Language mechanics
Commas, apostrophes, subject-verb agreement and capitalization are scored heavily and are quick to relearn.

HSPT practice test FAQ
No. UnofficialPrep is not affiliated with Scholastic Testing Service, which publishes the HSPT. Our questions are original and written to match the sections, formats and timing of the test.
Usually not. Most schools administer it once, and some policies say a retake replaces the first score even if it is lower. Preparing properly for the first sitting matters more than on most tests.
Schools set their own cutoffs and scholarship thresholds, usually in percentiles. The Readiness Report shows each section as a percentage and tracks it test over test, so you can see where the score is heading.
Six to ten weeks of short sessions covers the unfamiliar formats and the Language review most students need. Start with a diagnostic so the time goes to the weakest sections.
