The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test for admission to New York City's specialized high schools (Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech and others). Taken in 8th grade (a 9th-grade version also exists). Two parts, English Language Arts and Mathematics, 57 questions each, in one 180-minute sitting with no per-section time limit — students decide how to split their time. No calculator. No penalty for wrong answers, so every question should be attempted. Admission is by composite score against each school's cutoff.
Revising/Editing
Part A: standalone sentences and short paragraphs testing grammar, usage and mechanics. Part B: a passage with numbered sentences, testing revision for clarity, organization and precision.
Reading Comprehension
Six passages — informational, literary and poetry — with questions on central idea, evidence, inference, vocabulary in context, structure, purpose and craft.
Mathematics
Grade 7–8 mathematics with an emphasis on multi-step word problems. No calculator. Number sense, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability.
